Why was my domain flagged in the audit?

As an eco-friendly web hosting provider, we are committed to using as few resources and as little energy as we can.

From recent scans and testing, it appears that up to 9 in 10 hosting packages on our systems are unused (that is, not attached to a
live domain). This is likely because they were created temporarily, or a long time in the past, and were not deleted when they were no longer of use.

To test if a domain is in use, we check the IP address of the domain name, and the IP address of the mail servers, and if neither of those match any of our IPs, we consider the domain not to be in use.

An unused hosting package takes up the same amount of server space as a used one, and so we are implementing a plan to dramatically
reduce our server usage by removing unused packages.

Of course, we don't want anyone to use valuable data or have downtime on live sites, so the process for this has been carefully designed so that users are kept in the loop at all times.

The plan is as follows:

Every 3 months, if a hosting package is scanned and found to be unused, the owner will be notified by email.

The owner will then have the option to keep this hosting package activated, for any reason, with just 2 clicks.

If the owner doesn't do this, the hosting package will be suspended.

The owner will be notified, and again will have the option to reactivate the hosting package in 2 clicks.

If the owner does not do this within 30 days, the package will be deleted permanently (the owner will be notified again 7 days before this happens.
With this system in place, we hope that we can significantly reduce our environmental impact with zero critical data loss and minimal impact on our users.
